Scarecrows raise funds for rescue service
Come and see this year’s Scarecrow Festival in historic Wollombi, Hunter Valley, NSW from10 April – 10 May 2009.
The sound of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is all too familiar to local residents of the Wollombi Valley in the south west corner of the NSW Hunter Valley. In the last 15 months the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has made 14 rescues in the Wollombi Valley, 50 per cent of these being from motorcycle accidents.
To demonstrate its appreciation of the Rescue Helicopter Service, the Wollombi Valley Chamber of Commerce will donate all proceeds from its annual Scarecrow Festival to the service this year.
The Scarecrow Festival is an event which has evolved over a number of years, with both children and adults creating the most magnificent structures.
"I believe events such as the Scarecrow Festival showcase the community spirit and artistry of the Wollombi Valley," Mayor of Cessnock Councillor Alison Davey said. "The creativity, originality and imagination displayed by those who enter the Festival can only be described as resplendent."
"I can only applaud the Chamber of Commerce for their decision to donate the proceeds of the Festival to the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service – unfortunately all too often the Service is called to various areas within our LGA."
Roadside scarecrows will be on display from 10 April until 10 May 2009 through Laguna and Wollombi to Millfield. Visitors can vote for their favourite scarecrow in the People’s Choice Award - entry is a gold coin donation placed at local stores.
